Homemade Natural Deodorant: a Pit Stick to Rule Them All!

We love feeling fresh and smelling great. Deodorant helps us feel confident and at ease knowing that our natural body odor is being held at bay. About 90% of us apply it daily, that’s a lot of pit sticks! Although a key factor in choosing a deodorant is the effectiveness, it is also important to know the ingredients. Did you know that many deodorant products contain numerous harmful chemicals?

3 of the most common chemicals are:

1)Aluminum compounds -This compound is used to block pores to prevent sweating. However, it can be absorbed into the skin and research has shown that it interferes with estrogen levels and can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and Alzheimer’s.

2) Parabens– This is used as a preservative in many deodorants. A 2004 study showed that this mimics body hormones, such as estrogen, and can also be linked to the formation of breast cancer.

3)Triclosan– Triclosan is used primarily as an antibacterial agent. This ingredient can be an irritant to the skin. The FDA has classified it as a pesticide.

Deodorants are packed full of harmful chemicals; many of us are using them on our fresh out of the shower, open pore, ready to absorb anything skin. Now that we know our deodorant could be slowly and silently killing us, how do we find something natural that works without paying a high price?

Natural Deodorant

I have found an economical solution that both my husband and I love. We tried this recipe a year and a half ago and haven’t gone back. It is incredibly easy to make, requires a few simple ingredients, and goes a long way. One batch of this recipe will last us both several months.

Natural Deodorant

Total Time: 10 minutes

Yield: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 6 Tbs Coconut Oil, solid state
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/3 cup arrowroot powder
  • Essential Oil- *optional

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients into a bowl, starting with 6 Tbs of coconut oil.
  2. Work it in with a spoon or hand blender until it maintains a firm yet pliable texture.
  3. If it is too wet, add further arrowroot powder to thicken.
  4. *If desired, add 5-10 drops of essential oil of choice.
  5. Scoop mixture into an empty deodorant container or small container with a lid. If using a small container, apply with fingers with each use.

Notes

keep ingredients at room temperature to allow the oil to mix in well. The deodorant also needs to be kept at room or fridge temperature. In extreme heat the oil will melt.

Arrowroot Powder:

Arrowroot powder is a white and light natural root starch. It is often used as a substitute for cornstarch, which is highly processed. It works great as a base for body care products. I bought this at a local health food store for $7.50.

Coconut oil:

Any brand of coconut oil will work for the recipe. Personally, I do not enjoy smelling like coconut; it’s not my favorite scent. This brand of coconut oil (Spectrum Organic) contains no coconut scent! It is a little more expensive, so I only use it for my skin care products. I buy it when it’s on sale for $9.00.

Essential oil:

Many essential oils are wonderful natural deodorizers. To name a few, Lemon, Lavender, Geranium, and Tea tree oils are great for this purpose.  I usually use lemon oil, but this batch I used citrus bliss which is my current favorite fragrant blend.

The simplicity of this process may have you wondering why you even bought commercial deodorant in the first place.

Pour. Mix. Stir. Store. Shape. Done.

Occasionally with first-time use of a natural deodorant, there will be allergic reactions; this is caused by the previously absorbed chemicals from other deodorants leaving the body. This reaction clears up quickly as your body adjusts to natural products and doesn’t have to fight off the harmful chemicals anymore.
How often and how much needs to be applied will vary for each person. I simply rub it on after I shower, and occasionally before I exercise. My Husband requires a bit more than I do, but it still lasts a long time. After a few days of trial and error, you will know what works best for your body. 

The ingredient proportions in the recipe are tried and true. The end result is an effective, simple, chemical free product. This deodorant will keep you fresh and fragrant. Once you try it you won’t go back to those chemical-laden, pricey store bought deodorants. A pit stick to rule them all!
