Grandma’s Sweet Relish Recipe- easy to prepare and preserve

It’s my 7th birthday. I’m just like any ordinary 7-year-old, complete with two missing front teeth, a bad haircut, and a love for the girl band “Spice Girls”. Grandma asks me what I would like for my birthday and my immediate response is, “A jar of relish!”

You may be thinking my claim to being ordinary is incorrect, as any 7 year old in the 90’s would surely be asking for a Furby or a new cassette tape. Although the assumption that I was (am?) strange may be true, to truly understand my passionate response for preserved vegetables, you need to try this relish. My Grandmother’s Sweet Relish recipe is the most exquisite blend of concocted garden produce to ever hit your kitchen table.

Here is the same recipe my grandmother used to follow. My mom started making it when I kept begging for it as a child, so I no longer needed to ask for it as a birthday gift. I plan on keeping this stocked in my own kitchen cupboards. My Grandma’s Sweet Relish Recipe:

  • 8 large cucumbers
  • 12 large onions
  • 2 red peppers
  • 2 green peppers
  • 1 large cauliflower
  • 1/2 cup pickling salt
  • 5 cups water
  • 3 cups vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon of mustard seed
  • 1 Tablespoon of celery seed
  • 6 Tablespoons of dry mustard
  • 5 cups water
  • 6 cups white sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 Tablespoon tumeric

  1. Wipe cucumbers but do not peel. Slice them, either with a knife or food processor
  2. Cut a thin layer of cauliflower off before grinding so that there are a few larger chunks in the relish
  3. Put all vegetables through grinder/ food processor, and finely grind all vegetable ingredients (except cucumbers)
  4. Sprinkle on the salt and add 5 cups of water

Once the recipe is complete the jars can be processed to preserve the relish. I used a hot water bath canning method. Pour the relish into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch of space at the top of the jar. Wipe off any relish along the rim of the jars to make sure the seal will last. The jars need to be processed for 10 minutes. I found my ingredients at H&W produce near my home and even came across a great deal on locally grown cucumbers. I love knowing what is in my food and using vegetables grown close to home. Using a food processor made the first few steps simple and fast. If you don’t have one you can also use a blender or grinder and slice the cucumbers by hand. This sweet relish tastes great on your hamburgers and hotdogs, makes a mean tuna filling for sandwiches, and is a great garnish for pot roasts. Your children will love it so much they may start adding it to their birthday wish list! (or maybe that’s just me…)
This time of year is great for canning, so head on over to your farmers market, produce store, or even your own garden to gather the ingredients for Grandma’s simply made, exquisite, sweet relish.
