The Easiest Play Dough Recipe

My kids and I were having an at home (recoup from craziness) day. The only problem with this is they need something interactive and fun to keep them happy. They asked for play dough, and ours was looking a little worse for wear. Uhg. There is something about cooking play dough over the stove that rubs me the wrong way. The dough just sticks to the pot, creating a mess, and you stir and stir wondering the whole time if you are cooking it long enough or too long. So I looked up a non-cook recipe and found one on  the imagination tree blog.  I changed a few things on the ingredients list (I didn’t use glycerin, and added essential oils)

Play Dough

Total Time: 4 minutes

A no cook, simple play dough recipe.

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • Up to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
  • food colouring
  • essential oil (Optional)

  1. Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
  2. Add food colouring and essential oil TO the boiling water then into the dry ingredients (colour optional)
  3. Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
  4. Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. * This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency!*
  5. (If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right)
