I can vividly recall the feelings of frustration as my father would begin a parable at the dinner table, when I was struggling with my math homework, or when I had done something wrong. I would roll my eyes and complain that teaching a man how to fish had nothing to do with division, or how the story he told didn’t make any sense! It wasn’t until I got older that I began to appreciate the story-telling and understand the meaning behind my father’s quotes and parables. The children’s book, “I can sleep when the wind blows” brings back these memories. When I dwell on it, I can’t directly recall my father telling me this story. It seems so familiar, so close and comfortable that I wouldn’t be surprised if it came up a time or two; especially when I complained about my chores.
Book Review: I can sleep when the wind blows
I received a free digital copy of this book to honestly review. After reading it on my brightly lit screen, I crave holding and feeling the paper copy in my hands. Nothing beats the smell or feel of a good book; especially when it’s shared with my family.
The story is short and simple, perfect for young children. Personally, I craved more detail and a longer story line, but when you are dealing with toddlers and young children I think that this is more than sufficient. I love the fun and artistic watercolor illustrations that tell a story all on their own. Author and Illustrator worked well together on this book to create a compelling and interesting read, especially for children.
The meaning behind the story is one of being prepared, always being able to withstand the pressures and storms we encounter. It’s a great way to teach children the value of work, consistency, and preparation.
If you want to avoid the eye rolls or exasperated complaints of “you don’t make any sense!” while teaching a valuable life lesson, I suggest using this book! A fun story that teaches an important lesson all at the same time!
